Tamil Nadu bus fare hike and Government response

Tamil Nadu government hiked the bus fare after a long gap of 6 years on January 20th. After facing lots of protests from all the communities, the Government decided to reduce the fare partially as it couldn’t be rolled back completely. The minimum bus charge of Metropolitan Transport Corporation was hiked to rupees 5 from 3. It is again revised to 4. Similar to that the fare of the Express hiked from 5 to 8 which is now reduced to 6 rupees. The fare of the deluxe range goes to 12 from 7 which is then reduced down to 10 rupees. Even though the commuters had to pay one rupee extra as 5,7 and 11 rupees to cover the accident policies. The toll gates are paid 12 crore every month by State Transport Corporation.

Around 650 Transport corporation vehicles are coming under court custody for failing to  compensate for the accident victims. The Government also raises the common fund to cover the insurance and to claim amount to the accident victims and to pay the toll gate apart from increasing the bus fare. All the compensations will be collected from the commuters from the date of January 20. The fund collected will be used to provide ‘speed control devices’ to prevent road accidents up to some extent. It is pointed that in the state of karnataka the toll fees are collected from the commuters directly but in Tamil Nadu it is collected along with the bus fare itself.
