This day, that year: ‘Master Blaster‘ Sachin Tendulkar leaves field in tears
Exactly 4 years back to the day, Team India’s ‘Master Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar took the field for one final time in a Test match against West Indies in his home ground at the Wankhede Stadium and his glittering 24-year career came to an end.
On an unforgettable Saturday, they marked Sachin Tendulkar, the speaker. In an emotional farewell speech that moved a rapt audience to tears, Tendulkar revealed the special human beneath the legendary cricketer, and made adoring fans fall in love with him all over again.
Note: India had won the match by an innings and 126 runs, and the series 2-0, but that was reduced to a mere footnote. Pragyan Ojha picked up the man of the match award for his 10-wicket haul – and was lustily cheered for dedicating his award to Sachin.
Sachin was ready to give his farewell speech, with the presence of thousands of fans still present at the ground, his teammates and support staff, and also his family. The speech almost lasted for about half an hour.
Here is the last few minutes speech text:
“I know my speech is getting a bit too long, but this is the last thing I want to say. I want to thank all the people here who have flown in from various parts of the world, and have supported me endlessly, whether I scored a 0 or a 100-plus. Your support was so dear to me and meant a lot to me. Whatever you have done for me.
I know I have met so many guys who have fasted for me, prayed for me, done so much for me. Without that life wouldn’t have been like this for me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, and also say that time has flown by rather quickly, but the memories you have left with me will always be with me forever and ever, especially “Sachin, Sachin” which will reverberate in my ears till I stop breathing. Thank you very much. If I have missed out on saying something, I hope you understand. Goodbye.“
